Teaching Philosophy

"Having been a tour player and being a teacher/coach for the past 30 years, with a background in movement science and sports psychology, has enabled me to understand and evaluate the motion and mental preparation needed to play the game. I’m fascinated by people and enjoy getting to know them. These things together enable me to customize a program for each students’ needs. As someone who loves to play, including competition, I have had to work constantly on my game, and I understand the joy and frustration of playing and working on golf. Communication is incredibly important when working with anyone. I take time to get to know my students a bit before we start. I believe that by getting to know them I can help to bring out the best in them so that they can succeed and learn. It is a must to be creative as everyone is different. I want them all to enjoy their experience. This starts with giving them a clear understanding of what they should be striving towards and the tools needed to help them get there. It was particularly challenging at Chelsea Piers, being a driving range and not having a golf course within or near the facility. I needed to communicate not only the shots, but how to play to game. Working with such a diverse base of students was pretty exciting and taught me much about communication. My goal is for my students to make use of their talents whether they are athletic or not, so that they can get the most out of their game. I have found that every student can use movements and thought processes they already know and incorporate them in to learning and owning their own unique swing and game."
