Father’s Day
June 17, 2007 |
Today is a special day for me. My Father passed away ten years ago, on February 19th. I think about him, or something that he taught me, every day of my life.
My Father, who I called, “Pips”, was my idol. Greatest man I have ever known. I never walked into a room, that I didn’t kiss him. Never left our house, without saying I love you. He was gentle, yet could be enormously powerful. He was kind but could also be very tough. He was humble, yet part of history. He was Pips.
Let these words shed some light on him, what he looked like and who he was; but I fear they will never do him justice
His eyes were crystal blue and grey
And danced like stars in mischief
Inside a wrinkled face to say
A story within each weathered crease.
His hands were huge and rippled
Vices that gripped a hold you knew
Soft and gentle with freckles sprinkled
Tools of a warrior – a handshake true.
His voice was deep and soothing
And his words were chosen careful
Yet when said; a meaning proving
Wisdom is never rushed, nor fooled.
His legs were hued from massive oak
Sturdy pillars that moved in grace
His arms like leaden beams unbroken
But ever were you drawn to his face.
His life was a passage for ten books
One great adventure after the other
The friend of kings and writers and crooks
Married thrice, before my Mother.
The youngest Governor in American history
Whose fortune was made in steel
A pirate and swashbuckler he
A gallant prince; yet pure and real.
A man’s man; with the boys he laughed
But also years before his time
For he knew that women carved
An equal genius in their kind.
A sage, whose advice was ever sought
A truer friend you would never know
A humble icon; not paid not bought
He was my Father. I miss him so.
Happy Father’s Day.
