The 2003 Bird Golf Invitational was our most successful to date. Our largest field of students ever, contested the closest event in the three year history of the Invitational. For us at Bird Golf, the greatest thrill we can have is to watch our students improve and be captured by the magic of our wonderful game. Each and every contestant has improved dramatically.

Krista Katusha shows her great form on the Gold Course as her teammates look on.

As always, our tournament format has three students playing together for three rounds as a team. They are joined by a different professional each day whose respective score counts toward the team total. The first day featured an incredible performance from the team of Santiago & Rodrigo Pelaez, Kelly Ewing and professional Buddy Bryant. In the day’s Scramble format they shot a net 45! on the Wigwam’s Gold Course. These first round leaders distanced themselves from the second place team of Jerry Gebert, Rory Kidd, Krista Katusha by a whopping 9 shots!

Day 2 proved to be one of even more superlative performances. At the Arthur Hills Championship course at Palm Valley the team of Don & Barbara Raymond, Michael Wachs and professional Mary Mills were brilliant on their way to a 35 under par score in this Two Low Net Format. There were also two remarkable individual performances as Krista Katusha shot a 93 and Santiago Pelaez a 76. Both of these scores were their career lows. So after the second round things had changed at the top of the leader-board. The Invitational was now led by the Raymonds & Wachs team with the Katusha, Gebert & Kidd team second closely followed by the Pelaezs & Ewing team. Only three strokes separated first to third.

The final round at the Wigwam’s Gold Course proved to be another thriller. Coming from out of the pack and led by Buddy Bryant’s superb 65, the George & Jackie Yost, Jay Rollins team were the day’s winners in the Low Gross/Low Net format. This last day charge put their team in fourth place overall in the tournament. The Invitational winners, however, were the Katusha, Gebert and Kidd team who claimed the first place honors by 2 strokes over the Pelaezs, Ewing team with the Raymonds, Wachs trio a stroke back in third place. Buddy Bryant was the very deserving professional Champion.

Each year the Invitational grows and becomes an even more special event. This year, all of the professionals hosted different clinics after the first and second days and the Clear Key presentation by the “Doc” (the incomparable Cary Mumford) on check-in day proved to be the highlight for many.
