The 2013 Bird Golf Invitational

The 13th edition of the Invitational was certainly to prove lucky for some! As always it was wonderful to host our friends from all over the world. Literally. This year we had the great pleasure of welcoming students from Canada, Luxembourg, Hong Kong and Australia.

We all felt a loss and sadness that this would be the first Invitational without our beloved mentor, Carey Mumford, who passed away in October. It is our tradition that Carey would always be the opening night speaker and regale us all with his wit and brilliance. This year we honored the great man’s life in the hour before dinner and a great many fond memories and stories were shared. Shirley Furlong and Irena Powers came up with a very special tribute to Carey and made two different buttons which said “Carey On” and “Did you use your Clear Key?”.

The opening dinner was another superb menu produced by Executive Chef John Farley and his amazing staff at Sivlik. Following dinner we inducted the 7th member of The Walk of Honor, Shirley Furlong.  Shirley’s speech would touch the hearts of all in attendance and her night will be remembered by all for a long time. Shirley’s induction is so richly deserved and she means so much to so many.

Friday’s first round of the tournament was the most closely contested in the history of the event. The opening round is a scramble that is handicapped and only 6 stokes separated the first place team from the last placed team. In third place with a team score of 54.5 were the team of Pauline Lockard, Sigmund Haland and Jason Pankiw who played with professional Craig Waryan. In second place with a score of 53.1 were Tom Price (who came all the way from Hong Kong!), Lora Masche and Belinda Keever and professional Shirley Furlong. The day’s best team with a great score of 52.4 was the team of Irena Powers, Mike and Tracy Carlile and professional, Heath Morden.

Day 2 gave us another magnificent Fall desert day with temperatures in the low 80’s and the Devil’s Claw course at Whirlwind in the best condition it has ever been in. The play of our students matched the amazing condition of the course in this our Two Low Net format. In third place with a score of 130, were the team of Jon McMahon, Larry Kirk and Hub Donald with professional Pam Wright. In second place two strokes better at 128, were Don and Barb Raymond and Jonathan Gravenor (who came all the way from Australia!) with their professional Sharon Miller. The day’s best were a further two strokes better at 126 and were the team of Jeff and Rene Lee, Sue Lawless and their professional, Jim Samsing. They would also be the cumulative leaders after the first two rounds.

The winner of the putting contest was Jan Harris in the Ladies’ division, who putted brilliantly to shoot a 1-under par 17 on the treacherous putting course designed by the professionals at Whirlwind. The Men’s winner, with an equally impressive score of 2-under par, was Jason Pankiw.

The final round, always the most compelling, was especially so this year because of how tightly bunched the field was. The day’s best score was shared by two teams who played some superb golf. The trio of Stephanie Lary, David Schwan and Mike Gelinas with their professional Sean Maisch and the Raymond’s/Gravenor team with their professional, Justin Lake would share the day’s honors and record a fantastic score of 15 under par, 129. In third place for the day was the combination of Lockard, Haland and Pankiw who were led by professional, Pam Wright.

Don and Barb Raymond have played in 11 of the 13 Invitational and were the Champions in 2004 so it was a welcome return to the winner’s circle for 2013 Champions and a fabulous first time victory for Jonathan Gravenor. They played great golf for three days and richly deserved their hard won victory. Their stirring come from behind play would land the Lary, Schwan, Gelinas team a very deserved second place overall and the overnight leaders, the Lees/Lawless trio played so well to finish in third place overall.

As always all those who played, competed and were a part of the event, were winners. It is such a great joy for us to welcome all of our friends each year to celebrate this grand pursuit and we are so grateful to all of you who make the Invitational possible.

The closing dinner was held in the Eagle ballroom at the resort and the Chefs did their usual amazing job of giving us a closing dinner to remember. Thank you to all of you who make this annual trip and love this 4 days as we do, and thank you to all of you who came for the first time, this year! We hope to see YOU next year!
